President’s Corner

January kicked off 2009.  We closed out our CitiPass book sales, and turned in Camp Dogwood tickets at the Distrrict Convention.   With luck, we are in a position to build a relationship with Charlotte Center City Partners that may further Lions Projects in Charlotte.   New opportunities now lay before us, including new fund raising projects, welcoming new members, identifying our slate officers for the coming Lions year, led by our soon to be President, Lion Cesar Perez Sanchez.

Last month, I talked about the new year as a time for new beginings., We need to build on this idea but I and your Club Board of Directors cannot do this alone !  You must provide the ideas, support, enthusiasm, and effort to make any activity, whether fund raising or service oriented, a reality.  Project ideas suggested so far include Theater Projects (one or more), Attic/Garage Sale, Coloring Book Sales, Golf Tournament, Childrens ID cards.  In what are interested and willing to work?

Club de Leones Caracas-Los Chorros Celebrates 30 Years and invite members of the Charlotte SouthPark and Charlotte Providence Lions clubs to join them for the celebration in Caracas, Venezuela on April 26, 2009.   While such a trip may be out of the question for some members, this is
an unparalleled opportunity to demonstrate our partnership with the Los Chorros Lions, which we formalized on August 15, 2009.

For those able to participate, the plans include arrival in Caracas on April 24, 2009 with a tour of the city.   A vision screening service project will be held on Saturday morning April 25, with tours to nearby towns and sights on Saturday afternoon and evening.   The 30th Anniversary banquet and celebration will be on Sunday afternoon, April 26.   NC Lions will leave on Monday April 27.    Agenda Details and other information are available for SouthPark Lion VP Cesar Perez Sanchez.

Get Ready to Step Out and help find a cure for Diabetes.

This year’s Charlotte JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes will again be held at Carowinds Park, on Saturday, April 18, 2009.

Check-in time is 7:00 AM, Walk Start Time is 8:30 AM.   Since 1999, when the NC and SC Lions started participating in the JDRF walks, we have raised over $183,000, and regularly rank among the top 10 fund raising groups in the Charlotte area JDRF Chapter.    Please set aside Saturday April 18, recruit other walkers and ask friends, family, church members, and co-workers to support you and JDRF with a pledge in any amount.    Look for more information and fund raising ideas over the coming weeks.    Together we can help find a cure for the leading cause of blindness, diabetes.

SouthPark Lion Honored at 31-E Convention

On Saturday, January 24, 2008, District Governor Gordon McAdams and Lions International Director Larry Johnson (WV), before over 300 Lions, representing 62 Lions Clubs, presented SouthPark Lion VP Cesar Perez Sanchez, the International President’s Certificate of Appreciation.  The award was presented to Lion Cesar for performing significant service to Lionism, specifically in honor of his work in club extension, establishing the SouthPark Branch Club which quickly grew and was chartered as the Charlotte Providence Lions Club.

The SouthPark delegation included PDG Jim Sasser,  Lion Shelia Mitchell-SasserJoyce Garbee, PDG Hunter Garbee, and club Vice President Lion Cesar Sanchez.   It was fitting that the Providence club was also well represented to see our friend and fellow Lion Cesar honored by Lions Clubs International.

This is a singular honor and we are proud of the efforts put forth by Lion Cesar, who truly lives the motto, “We Serve”.   Whether assisting at Vision Van screenings, serving dinner to the homeless at the Emergency Winter Shelter, building membership, or seeking ways to help others, Lion Cesar is always there!

                               He is truly a “Lion’s Lion” !!!
