Camp Dogwood, located on Lake Norman in Catawba County North Carolina, was started in 1967.   The 60-acre campus is maintained as a recreational facility for the blind and visually impaired.   The camp provides a great vacation experience for the independently mobile camper and the camper needing assistance with mobility.

Camp Dogwood began in 1967 with two weeks of camp.   In 2006, over 800 attended twelve six day sessions during the summer.   Major activities for the campers include: water-front boating and tubing; horseback riding; crafts and a variety of other fun and challenging experiences.

The Lions of North Carolina own and operate a screening van that offers needy persons a vision screening that includes near and far-sighted tests, a field vision test and checks for glaucoma, cataracts and other potential vision problems.

In the past five years the van has screened over 100,000 persons, with a referral rate of over 50%.   The SouthPark Lions sponsor two to three van visits each year.

The Lions of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina own and operate Lions Services, Inc., which employs about 150 blind and sight-impaired persons annually.   The company makes, packages, and sells a wide variety of products such as chin straps for the military, sheets, pillow cases, and others.

The Lions Eye Clinic is attached to Lions Services, Inc., and provides eye exams and eye glasses to needy persons sponsored by individual Lions clubs and the North Carolina Lions Foundation.

The Lions of North Carolina recycle used eye glasses, hearing aids, cell phones, and printer cartridges.   The used eye glasses are sent to Third World Countries and distributed to the needy.   The other recycled items are sent to companies that use them and send funds to the North Carolina Lions Foundation for charitable projects.
